Liverpool Inch Closer To 20th League Title, Leicester Relegated

Wilfred Ndidi's Leicester City relegated again

Table toppers, Liverpool, has moved closer to their 20th League title, with a lone goal victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday night.

Late strike by substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold in a goal mouth melee was all that was needed to hand the Reds the maximum point, pushing them a touching distance to the league title.

The visitors would have recorded more goals but for Mo Salah’s three presentable missed chances. The victory puts Liverpool on 79 points and will only need another win to emerge league champions.

It has been a catalogue of woes for Leicester City, who have now been officially relegated to the Championship for the second time.

Sunday’s defeat marked the Foxes ninth successive home game without scoring. It equally marks the team’s 23rd defeat of the season. The lack of attacking prowess was again in evidence and needs to be tackled in the summer transfer window if a realistic promotion campaign is to be mounted.

The drop back into the Championship has been a long time coming for the Foxes. In some ways, it is relief for Leicester fans now it has finally happened.

The club will need to dig deeper in efforts to prepare for next season. Decisions have to be made about which players to keep and whether or not Ruud van Nistelrooy has done enough to convince the hierarchy that he has what it takes to lead a promotion push.

It has been a painful experience for Super Eagles defender, Wilfred Ndidi, as he has unfortunately suffered two relegations from the premier league with the Foxes.

With the defeat tonight, Leicester City lost their Premier League status again ahead of next season, with a disappointing 18 points from 33 matches, with five games left to play.

A notable statistic highlighted in this difficult season is their struggle to find the back of the net at home, marking nine consecutive Premier League games without a goal. Their last home league goal was on December 8 against Brighton.

While Leicester City were leaking their wounds and counting their loses over the Easter Sunday defeat, second placed Arsenal produced yet another master class, following their champions league outing against Real Madrid, with a resounding 4-0 demolition of Ipswich Town

The result delayed Liverpool’s emergence as Premier league champions as they have to wait till at least Wednesday to become champions.

The Gunners opened scoring in the first half through goals from Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli. A 32nd minute Leif Davis red card, for a reckless tackle on Bukayo Saka, meant the Tractor Boys were down to 10 men.

The away side came out in the second half looking for more goals, and they were rewarded through a second Trossard goal and a deflected strike from substitute Ethan Nwaneri.

This win for Arsenal means Mikel Arteta’s side move 10 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, having played a game more.
