France superstar, Kylian Mbappe, will need surgery but will not be going immediately under the knife till after the Euro Championship, coach Didier Deschamps, has confirmed

After battling to win the ball from a set-piece, Mbappe saw his follow-through motion take him directly into the shoulder of Kevin Danso. The former PSG talisman left the field covered in blood in the closing stages of France’s win over Austria, with his fitness in doubt.

Speaking to the press, France boss Deschamps said: “This Wednesday there will be more tests to see his evolution. It was a major shock. The medical staff did everything necessary to reduce it as much as possible, after the tests.

“Even if there is no surgery immediately, he will have to do it after the tournament. This morning he was already a little better, so we will see. We will follow it closely every day.”

After initial concerns that his tournament could be in doubt, the French Football Federation were reassured after Mbappe’s trip to the hospital. The forward will return to the tournament but his status for France’s match against Netherlands was not confirmed

Mbappe is among the players tipped to compete in the golden ball award of the championship, but the injury puts a bit of a setback for him. Mbappe missed a begging chance to increase the goal tally against Austria in the group opener. France will file out against Netherlands on Friday in their second group match. Meanwhile hosts Germany will be hoping to record two wins in two games as they take on Hungary today.

Other matches lined up today include Croatia against Albania and Scotland against Switzerland.
