Nigerian Airline Operators Lament Additional Operating Costs As FAAN Closes Lagos Airport Domestic Runway

A fire outbreak on Monday gutted part of the old terminal at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, triggering panic among airport workers and passengers before emergency responders brought the situation under control, Prime Business Africa reports.

The incident affected Terminal 1 of the ageing facility, which is currently undergoing a multi-billion-naira renovation project aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving passenger experience.

Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the building in the early hours of the outbreak, prompting fears among travellers and staff in the vicinity. Eyewitnesses said some persons hurriedly moved away from the affected area as firefighters battled the flames.

According to FAAN, emergency protocols were activated swiftly, and the fire was successfully curtailed before it could spread to other sections of the terminal. The agency added that no casualties were recorded.

While the exact cause of the fire had not been officially disclosed as of press time, FAAN said investigations would be conducted to determine what triggered the incident.

Sources within the airport community indicated that the affected portion forms part of the old terminal complex currently under rehabilitation, a project designed to modernise facilities at Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub.

As of Monday evening, there were no confirmed reports of major disruptions to flight operations at the international terminal, though movements around the old terminal area were temporarily restricted during firefighting efforts.

Authorities assured the public that safety remained a top priority and that necessary steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence.
