The Eze Ogbunechendo of Ezema Olo Kingdom in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Dr. Lawrence Agubuzu, has urged President Tinubu to take decisive action on the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, calling for either his release or repatriation to Kenya.

Agubuzu made the appeal on Tuesday while delivering a goodwill message at the 2026 National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

In his remarks, the monarch said frustration over Kanu’s incarceration has intensified scepticism among youths in the South-east, many of whom, he noted, believe their leaders have failed to speak forcefully on issues affecting the region.

According to him, the perception that political and traditional figures remain silent after engagements in Abuja has widened the trust gap between leaders and young people in the region.

“The youths in the South-east see us as sell-outs. When we come to Abuja, they think we come to collect money and keep quiet on these issues. Mr President should do something about Nnamdi Kanu,” Agubuzu stated.

Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, has been in federal custody since 2021 following his arrest abroad and return to Nigeria. His case has continued to generate debate across the South-east, with advocacy groups and community leaders calling for a political solution, while the Federal Government maintains that the matter is subject to judicial processes.

Agubuzu stressed that sustainable national development requires candid engagement with contentious national questions, warning that avoiding difficult conversations could stall progress.

“We cannot make progress in this country if we don’t tell ourselves the whole truth,” he said.

The traditional ruler also revealed plans to honour Yoruba nation activist Sunday Igboho, describing him as Kanu’s counterpart in the South-west. Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, has similarly been involved in separatist agitation and related legal disputes.

Kanu’s continued detention remains one of the most sensitive political issues in the South-east, shaping discussions around national cohesion, justice, and political inclusion.
