Enugu State Honours Mike Ejeagha, Commissions Road Named After Him

The nonagenarian who has continued to trend following social media re-birth of his 41 year old Gwo Gwo Ngwo classic, had another feather added to his cap Thursday, after Governor of Enugu State His Excellency Peter Mbah announced the re-naming and commissioning of Obinagu road in the Abakpa area of the Coal City state after the him.

Governor Mbah while cutting the tape to mark the event, hailed the contribution of the 92 year old musician and master story teller, adding that it was an honour well deserved.

“We have always told people that Enugu State is the home of legends, and we have one man who brings memories of years gone by, to our door steps, and in honour of him, the entire stretch of this Obinagu, Mike Egeagha road is being named after him” he said

Accompanied by some of his cabinet members and appreciative crowd, the Governor also paid Mike Ejeagha who was almost moved to tears, a visit after the commissioning.

The Governor did not fail to participate in demonstration dance of the ever trending Gwo Gwo Ngwo dance.

Recall that Gentleman Mike Ejeagha returned with a bang to limelight after skitmaker Brain Jotter re-awakened his 1983 song Onye Isi Oche and Gwo Gwo Ngwo dance posted on his Instagram account on July 5, 2024.

The video did not only go viral but has continued to trend bring the nonagenarian more accolades and fortune, while putting smiles on the faces Nigerians with nostalgic feelings

The viral folklore song about the cleverness of the tortoise (Mbe) and the might of the elephant (Enyi) is one of the notable works of the highlife legend Gentleman Mike Ejeagha whose music packs morals using folklore, proverbs, and social commentary.

All Mike Ejeagha’s songs convey one life lesson or the other, even the current scenario where he is being acknowledged for his works done several years ago is equally captured in one of songs ‘Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma (Which appears to capture the reward he is currently getting from far and near)

The Appreciation Mike Ejeagha by government, different groups and individuals alike in recent times is a confirmation that  hard work still pays and that what is worth doing is worth doing well.

His diligence in putting together stories that remain evergreen became his unique selling point. It is worthy of note that close to 50 years later the songs are still serving as point of reference, educative and  memorable.
