EFCC Rejects Bala Mohammed’s Allegations of Political Witch Hunt

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed that the agency is being used by political opponents, particularly the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to target him and his aides, Prime Business Africa reports.

In a statement issued on Friday, the EFCC described the governor’s allegations as “wild” and “far-fetched,” stressing that the commission operates independently, without political bias, and pursues its mandate against economic and financial crimes without favoritism.

The agency rejected suggestions that Wike or any other political figure could influence its investigations, highlighting that Governor Mohammed was previously under investigation for alleged money laundering a case currently on hold due to the constitutional immunity his office affords.

Wike Denies Role in EFCC Case, Fires Back at Bala Mohammed Over Allegations

The EFCC noted that the ongoing case involving Bauchi State officials has already been brought before the courts. The governor’s mention in the charges, the commission said, stems from his role as the approving authority in the state, not from political vendetta.

The commission also described claims of terrorism financing as exaggerated and reminded the public that enforcing existing laws is its responsibility. It criticised opposition politicians for framing accountability as persecution while remaining silent when ruling party members face similar scrutiny, citing a recent arraignment of a ranking APC official for alleged corruption that drew no such complaints.

The EFCC concluded by urging Governor Mohammed to focus on the governance of Bauchi State and allow the agency to carry out its anti-corruption mandate.
