Courtroom Tension as Judge Orders Security to Remove Kanu

Kanu's U.S Lawyer To Meet New British Envoy To Nigeria Over His Release

Drama unfolded Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja as the terrorism trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu reached a critical stage.

The court session, originally set for the delivery of judgment, was disrupted when Kanu insisted on delivering his final address.

Justice James Omotosho, presiding over the case, sought to proceed with judgment in the high-profile case. Kanu, however, demanded that the court consider several motions he filed, which challenge the legitimacy of the charges and question the court’s jurisdiction.

After repeated objections, the judge ordered security personnel to escort Kanu out of the courtroom, saying he had already been given the opportunity to defend himself and was deemed to have waived that right by refusing to open his defense.

Kanu’s motions include a claim that the laws underpinning his charges, such as the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013, and related statutes, have been repealed, invalidating the prosecution.

He also requested that his initial not-guilty plea be expunged, alleging it was obtained under duress, and raised challenges to the court’s jurisdiction and procedures. The judge clarified that all pending motions would be considered at the time of judgment and not before.

Kanu faces seven counts, including terrorism, which he denies. The trial has become a focal point of national attention, raising questions over the validity of the laws used to prosecute him and highlighting tensions in the courtroom as legal, political, and constitutional issues intersect.

Observers note that Thursday’s confrontation, where Kanu was removed by security personnel, underscores the high stakes and intense scrutiny surrounding this trial, which continues to capture domestic and international attention.
