ASUU Resumes Indefinite Strike at Taraba State University Over Unmet Agreement

February 18, 2026

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University branch, has resumed its previously suspended indefinite strike following what it described as the Taraba State Government’s failure to honour agreements reached in January 2025, Prime Business Africa reports.

The action, which takes effect from February 18, 2026, affects academic activities at Taraba State University (TSU), leaving students at home until further notice.

In a statement issued in Jalingo on Wednesday, the branch chairman, Joshua Garba Mbave, said the union resolved to resume the strike after a congress meeting reviewed the government’s alleged failure to implement the Memorandum of Action signed on January 17, 2025.

Nigeria Signs ASUU Deal That Could End University Strikes

According to the union, the earlier suspension of the strike was done in good faith to give the government time to fulfil its commitments. However, it said there were no practical or verifiable steps taken to address the issues in dispute.

Among the unresolved matters listed by ASUU are the absence of a functional pension scheme for university staff, unpaid salary arrears, non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances, and the failure to implement the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government as it affects the institution.

The union maintained that prolonged neglect of these concerns has worsened staff welfare and weakened academic activities at the university. It added that lecturers can no longer cope with the economic strain caused by delayed and unpaid entitlements.

ASUU further stated that while dialogue with the Taraba State Government had been ongoing, the talks did not yield concrete results, leaving members with no option but to withdraw their services indefinitely.

As of the time of filing this report, the state government had yet to issue an official response to the resumption of the strike.

The development marks another disruption to the academic calendar at TSU, with uncertainty looming over when normal academic activities will resume.
