APC Slams False Reports: Canadian Court Did Not Declare Party A Terrorist Organisation

August 16, 2025

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed recent media reports claiming that a Canadian court labelled the party a terrorist organisation, calling the claims “false and misleading.”

The clarification follows widespread circulation of stories linking the June 17, 2025 ruling in the case of Douglas Egharevba vs. The Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to the APC. In reality, the court only addressed Egharevba’s inadmissibility in Canada due to his past membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which the court found had engaged in acts of subversion against Nigeria’s electoral process under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).

APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka emphasized that the party was only mentioned in the judgment as part of the applicant’s background claims. Egharevba had alleged membership in the APC from 2007 to 2017, but the party was officially registered in 2013, making earlier membership impossible. The court explicitly refrained from analyzing terrorism, with Judge Phuong T.V. Ngo noting that subversion findings alone were sufficient to dismiss the application.

The PDP also rejected claims of a terrorist designation, with Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor calling the reports “misinformed, biased, and lacking credible evidence.” Both parties warned that misleading coverage could damage Nigeria’s global reputation and unfairly stigmatize political actors.

APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru described the media reports as “ill-informed” and warned of potential diplomatic tensions with Canadian authorities, stressing that the party is a legitimate democratic institution. Analysts say the controversy exposes the dangers of misreporting judicial decisions abroad and underscores the need to carefully distinguish political subversion from terrorism.

Both parties have vowed to challenge the narrative, with the PDP exploring legal and diplomatic options, and the APC calling on the Nigerian government to register a formal objection with Canadian authorities.
