Tinubu Urges Orderliness, Restraint as INEC Conducts Elections in FCT, Kano, Rivers

February 21, 2026

President Tinubu has called on voters, security agencies and electoral officials to conduct themselves peacefully and professionally during Saturday’s elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano and Rivers states.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President urged all stakeholders to ensure the polls are orderly and credible.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is scheduled to conduct elections across the six area councils of the FCT, as well as bye-elections in the Ahoada East II and Khana II State constituencies in Rivers State, and in the Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.

Tinubu encouraged eligible voters to turn out without fear, stressing that democracy thrives best in an atmosphere of calm, tolerance and mutual respect.

He appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to avoid violence, inflammatory rhetoric and any action capable of undermining the integrity of the electoral process.

The President also cautioned security agencies against high-handedness or intimidation, warning that any conduct capable of disenfranchising voters or eroding public trust must be avoided. He emphasised that security personnel are deployed strictly to protect lives, property and the sanctity of the ballot.

Tinubu further urged INEC to take all necessary measures to strengthen voter confidence by ensuring timely accreditation, smooth voting procedures, accurate collation and prompt transmission of results, in compliance with the 2026 Electoral Act.

“Fellow Nigerians, I assure you that the Federal Government under my administration will continue to support institutions responsible for delivering free, fair and credible elections,” the President said.

He commended residents of the FCT, Kano and Rivers for their civic engagement and expressed confidence that the elections would reflect the will of the people and deepen Nigeria’s democratic journey.
