UBA Mourns Former Chairman, Chief Israel Ogbue, at 99

Chief Israel C. Ogbue, former Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has died at the age of 99, Prime Business Africa reports.

The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of UBA announced his passing in a statement on Wednesday, describing him as a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator who devoted more than six decades to public and private sector service in Nigeria.

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Ogbue began his career in the Federal Civil Service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies. He later built an accomplished career at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), rising through senior management ranks and serving until his retirement in 1988.

Following his retirement, his governance expertise earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA. He joined the bank’s board in 2005 as a Non-Executive Director and was appointed Chairman in 2011. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 2013.

According to the bank, Ogbue provided “steady and principled leadership” during a defining period in UBA’s transformation, reinforcing corporate governance, accountability and long-term sustainability.

Beyond his corporate accomplishments, Ogbue was known as a devoted family patriarch and mentor. He was the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu.

UBA has extended its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates, celebrating what it described as “a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact.”

Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements, the family said, will be announced in due course.
