Trump Weighs Military Action Against Iran as Diplomacy Continues

February 19, 2026

President Trump has been briefed on a series of military options for possible action against Iran, including scenarios that could involve sustained air and naval operations, according to senior U.S. and foreign officials.

Even as preparations intensify, the White House is continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at avoiding open conflict.

Officials say Trump’s national security team has outlined a range of strategies designed to limit Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes and reduce the regional reach of its political and military leadership.

The options under consideration reportedly include strikes targeting strategic infrastructure such as nuclear and ballistic-missile facilities, as well as broader plans intended to exert maximum pressure on Tehran’s ruling establishment. However, officials stress that no final decision has been made and no order to carry out military action has been issued.

Markets Fall as Iran Signals New Chance for Nuclear Talks

In recent weeks, U.S. forces have been repositioned across the Middle East in what officials describe as preparations for a potentially weeks-long campaign if authorised. The buildup includes additional aircraft, fighter squadrons, naval destroyers and support vessels. The deployment of a second aircraft carrier strike group to the region has further expanded the United States’ operational capacity, signaling readiness while stopping short of imminent action.

Administration officials maintain that diplomacy remains the preferred course. Senior figures have reiterated that Tehran would benefit from reaching a negotiated agreement to curb its nuclear activities rather than face possible military consequences.

Indirect talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives have continued, including meetings in Geneva and Oman. While negotiators have identified certain guiding principles, substantial differences persist, particularly over uranium enrichment levels and long-range missile development. The lack of a comprehensive agreement has kept tensions elevated.

International reactions have been cautious. Russia has warned against any new U.S. strike on Iran, citing concerns over regional stability. Tehran has signaled that it would defend its interests and has conducted joint military exercises to demonstrate readiness. Iranian officials have also pointed to the strategic importance of maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil shipments, as a reminder of the broader stakes involved.

With U.S. forces positioned and diplomacy still uncertain, the situation remains fluid. Trump continues to review military options while publicly signaling that negotiation remains possible, leaving regional governments and global markets watching closely for the next move.
