British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a phone conversation late Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Geneva, ongoing U.S.–Iran nuclear negotiations, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Downing Street said.
The call came after the first day of U.S.-mediated peace negotiations in Geneva aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, now approaching its fourth year. According to a Downing Street spokesperson, the two leaders discussed the urgency of progress in the talks and broader diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict to an end.
The negotiations, which continued into a second day in Switzerland, have been described as complex and tense. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly expressed concern over what he characterised as pressure on Kyiv to make concessions, particularly regarding territory. Ukrainian officials have maintained that any settlement involving territorial compromises would require public approval.

In addition to Ukraine, Starmer and Trump discussed ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme. While both sides have acknowledged continued engagement, no final agreement has been announced. The talks are aimed at addressing longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities and related sanctions.
The leaders also addressed the situation in Gaza, where Starmer stressed the importance of securing greater humanitarian access to allow aid deliveries into the territory. The United Kingdom has repeatedly called for improved conditions to facilitate the flow of food, medical supplies and other essential assistance to civilians affected by the conflict.
The conversation underscores continued coordination between London and Washington on major global security and diplomatic issues, spanning the war in Ukraine, nuclear non-proliferation efforts, and the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.
