The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has joined the investigation into a controversial “spiritual cleansing” ceremony in Port Harcourt, in which minors were whipped by a pastor and his church members.

NAPTIP’s Intelligence Officer, Komani Timipire, said the agency was treating the matter as potential child abuse, stressing that parental consent does not override the rights of a child. “The Child Rights Act clearly prohibits all forms of cruel treatment against minors,” she said, adding that the rescued children are now in temporary protective custody, receiving medical and psychological assessments.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Pastor Ifediorah Onyeibor Joseph of Our Lord Victory Covenant Mission Church in Eneka, along with few church officials. Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, assured that a thorough investigation was underway, promising to ensure the welfare and dignity of the children.

However, in an unexpected twist, several parents of the children involved visited the Eneka Police Division singing and dancing in support of the pastor. They claimed the ceremony was harmless and carried out with their full consent. One parent, Mrs. Ngozi Uzoma, told journalists: “The children were undergoing a harmless spiritual exercise, and no harm was intended.”

Police say the case will be prosecuted based on evidence and in accordance with child protection laws, regardless of the parents’ position.

NAPTIP stressed that parental approval cannot be used as a shield against legal action when a child’s welfare is at stake. The Rivers State Police Command echoed this stance, warning that religious or cultural practices will not excuse acts deemed harmful to minors.

The unfolding case is poised to test the strength of Nigeria’s child protection laws against deeply rooted community and religious traditions a clash that could set a legal precedent far beyond Port Harcourt.
