The Continental ruling body slammed the former Barcelona and Chelsea star with a fine of $200 thousand for violating principles of ethics, integrity and sportsmanship as provided in Article 2 paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes.

The two-time Nations Cup winner and four-time African footballer of the year according to CAF,  violated rules   by  signing a Brand Ambassador contract with betting company 1XBET in exchange for remuneration.

He however escaped sanction in a bigger allegation of match fixing and manipulation.

Eto’o faced charges of alleged manipulation of football matches and violating the principles of ethics and integrity.

The Disciplinary Board ruled that there was insufficient proof to find him and Valentin Nkwain guilty of match manipulation.

Eto’o’s Possible Next Step

There are strong indications that Eto’o Fils who signed a contract to earn 300 million FCFA from the betting franchise will cancel the deal and accept his fines to avoid further punitive measures.

World Soccer ruling body FIFA and Continental ruling bodies including CAF frown at deals that attempt to undermine the ethics of football including interference in the activities of Football Federations.
