At Last, Woman Who Stabbed Husband Gets 55 Years Sentence

Blanca Hermandez 32, who pleaded guilty to stabbing her husband to death has been sentenced to 55 years imprisonment.

Hernandez, admitted to the May 20 murder of 35-year-old Alejandro Vergara in the Dunlap home they shared with many children.

Earlier claiming the man stabbed her then stabbed himself, she has confirmed she actually killed her husband.

According to police reports: “Both of them were found in the basement of the home in the pool of their blood after responding to a 911 call from a woman who said her husband had stabbed her and then stabbed himself.”

Details presented in the probable cause affidavit of the case has it that the first officer on the scene confirmed he found her performing chest compressions on her already-dead husband

Vergara was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was also found to be injured and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

As the detectives investigated further, they discovered some evidence which suggested that the man had died prior to when police and emergency responders arrived at the crime scene. A firefighter confirmed to the detectives that Vergara’s body was cooler than it should have been if he had died the time it took to respond to the distress call. A doctor also told detectives Hernandez’s injuries were consistent with self-inflicted stab wounds.

In judgment, Hernandez appeared before Judge Michael Christofeno for her sentencing hearing early Thursday morning, January 27, 2022 in Elkhart County Circuit Court.

The judge had in late December 2021 found the woman guilty as charged and convicted her of murder for stabbing her husband to death while in their home in the 23000 block of Florence Avenue on the morning of May 20, 2021.

In pleading guilty, Judge Christofeno asked Hernandez how she killed her husband and she simply replied: “Stab — stab him.”
