The people of Alor Agu in Igbo-Eze South Local Government of Enugu State have cried out to Governor of the State, Peter Mba over the now unusable access road linking their community to other parts of the state.

They lamented that the road which had never received government’s attention has now become a death trap and a major source of vehicular breakdown, thereby worsening poverty in the agrarian community as farmers can’t commute with their produce to major markets around.

“The crops we produce from our farms end up getting spoilt because there are no vehicles for us to use in taking them to Ogrute where they are needed. Lately, Alor Agu is being avoided by motorists as if a plague is ravaging us. I doubt if there’s any other plague worse than this failed road we are contending with,” a farmer, Onukwube told our correspondent.

Other members of the community who spoke to Prime Business Africa lamented that the road is so decrepit that even pedestrians can’t walk freely on it without stumbling. They pointed out that there are instances of aged people who broke their limb while trying to walk on the road.

A villager who identified himself as Omabe told our correspondent that the road has deteriorated to the point that it doesn’t allow easy trekking on the stretch. “All the commercial vehicles has ceased using our road because there is no free place to manoeuvre.”

It was gathered that heavy duty vehicles that attempted to use the road got stuck for days until they were towed away for repairs. It is now so rare to see vehicles in the community that the sounds of one is now a sight to behold for the villagers.

Another member of the community, Ngwu Onah said: “Our poor mothers and fathers now find it very difficult to go for trading activities in the popular Afọr market in the neighboring Unadu community due to the dangerous road.

“Before now, okada riders (commercial motorcyclists) use to charge N300 from our market square to Unadu market square but now you’ll be lucky to find one that would collect N800 as most Okada riders have stopped plying the route. Yet, this is a five-minute ride that now takes a biker at least 25 minutes.”

For Ifeoma Okwy, her worry is that her loved ones who aware of how hellish the road has become are refusing to return home for this year’s Yuletide, lamenting that members of the community are already staring at a bleak Christmas holiday unless something urgent is done.

The community then called on Governor Mba and the Igbo-Eze South local government chairman, Hon Vitus Okechi, to ameliorate their sufferings by urgently fixing the road.

They held that further delay worsens the situation as erosion is steadily taking over portions of the road.
