1. Labour Protests As FG Threatens Union Leader With Contempt Charge Over Planned Strike

National Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress, Tommy Etim, has berated moves by the Federal Government to stop the organised labour from embarking on an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Tuesday, October 3, 2023, using the court.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, wrote to the legal team of the two unions urging them to persuade their clients to shelve the planned strike.

 

2. Academic Record: Atiku Asks Court To Overrule Tinubu’s Objection

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has filed a fresh motion urging the United States court to overrule President Tinubu’s request to stop Chicago State University from releasing his academic results.

Atiku is currently challenging Tinubu’s emergence as the winner of the February 25 election. The matter is currently before the Supreme Court in Nigeria.

The former vice president of Nigeria declared that his goal is to test the authenticity and origin of the 12-page document, including the two very different diplomas, purportedly issued by CSU.

 

3. Lagos Police Arrest Sam Larry

Balogun Olamilekan aka Sam Larry is currently in police custody. He was arrested on Friday, September 28, 2023, in connection with the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad. This was confirmed by the police public relations officer on his verified Twitter page.

The death of Mohbad has sparked outrage in Nigeria, with many people calling for justice.

The police have assured the public that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice.

 

4. Nigeria’s Fuel Quality, Price Attracting Smugglers – Customs

The Nigerian Customs Service on Thursday said its latest findings showed that the quality and price of Nigeria’s Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) or petrol were the key factors causing the persistent smuggling of the product out of the country.

It also announced a monthly rise in revenue generation, representing an increase of 70 per cent. With this, it said, the service has surpassed its monthly revenue target of N307 billion.

 

5. Nigerian Government Targets Wealthy Nigerians in New Tax Drive

The Nigerian government is planning to overhaul the nation’s tax system to shift more of the burden to wealthy citizens while cutting corporate taxes. it is part of President Tinubu’s reforms to overhaul the beleaguered economy.

The plan is to make “the rich pay what is fair and those who are too poor can be protected,” said Taiwo Oyedele, who is leading a panel appointed by Tinubu to drive the changes. A tax amnesty will be introduced to provide relief on old debts and prepare the minds of the people to meet future obligations.

 

6. NPF Microfinance Bank Grows Profit by 171% To 646m

The NPF has released its financial results for the first quarter of 2023, where it reported a 171.5 per cent increase in profit to 645.94 million from 242.79 in the same period in 2022.

The financial results filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Thursday show that the bank also grew its gross earnings by 62.79 per cent to N2.28bn from N1.47 billion.

The bank obtained shareholders’ approval to raise capital to convert into a commercial bank.

 

7. Supreme Court Affirms Imo LP Guber Candidate

Wild jubilation broke out at the secretariat of the Labour Party in Abuja when the Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed Senator Athan Achonu as the Labour Party governorship candidate for the November 11 governorship election in Imo State. He would become the first physically challenged governor in the country if he wins the election.

An aggrieved aspirant in the last LP primaries, Basil Maduka, had objected to Achonu’s candidature but the apex court dismissed the case on Thursday.

 

8. WHO Releases $16 Million To Tackle Cholera

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released 16 million dollars from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies to tackle cholera. WHO Director, Dr. Tedros said the organisation was providing essential supplies, supporting countries to detect, prevent and treat cholera. According to him, countries invested so much in building their systems to respond to Covid-19. He urged countries to sustain those systems, to ensure people can be protected and treated from infectious threats.

 

9. FG Earmarks N75bn for Financing of 100,000 Start-ups, MSMEs

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has earmarked a total of N75 billion for start-up businesses and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to boost economic activities in the country.

The Minister made the disclosure during his opening remark at the opening ceremony of the 18th Abuja International Trade Fair on Thursday.

10. Osun Road Crash: How Five LAUTECH Students, Driver Burnt to Death

Three occupants of the bus travelling along Osogbo/ Ifon/ Oyo boundary road Wednesday evening were reportedly burnt to death in the road crash. But six others were rescued by the operatives of Osun Ambulance Scheme from the scene of the accident which occurred near Ojutu Bridge, Ilobu.
