Tinubu Removes UNN, Abuja University VCs, Reshuffles Leadership In Other Institutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed the Vice-Chancellors of the University of Abuja and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

This was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing council of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, and relieved Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.

The statement reads: “At Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing council and relieved Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.”

Similarly, the UNN’s acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu, whose tenure was to end on 14 February, was removed and replaced by  Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam.

“Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position,” the statement further read.

The president also appointed Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN.

Other key reshuffling was also made in other federal universities.

Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, was appointed Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University.

The President appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as acting Vice Chancellor at the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term.

Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, was appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja while Senator Sani Stores became the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi.

Additionally, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the UNN, was as well appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

According to the statement, these changes take immediate effect.

Onanuga emphasised that these changes reflect the president’s commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s higher education system.

“All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately.

“President Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.

“The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”
