Popular Nigerian Singer, Onyeka Owenu, Dies At 72

Nigeria’s iconic singer, songwriter and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, has passed on.

Onwenu was said to have slumped after performing at the 80th birthday party of the Founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Mrs. Stella Okoli, in Lagos on Tuesday night and was confirmed dead early Wednesday morning at Reddington Hospital, where was rushed to for medical care.

Born on 31st January 1952, Onwenu, hails from Arondizuogu, in Ideato North LGA, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria.

She was also a human rights and social activist, journalist, and former X Factor series judge.

Onwenu, who was also called “Elegant Stallion”, was educated at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, where she obtained a Bachelors degree in International Relations and Communication, and also, an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York.

The music maestro had iconic performances at different functions. Her music often touched on social and political issues.
