7 Signs a Video or Voice Recording Might Be a Deepfake

March 10, 2026

Deepfakes—AI-generated videos, images, or audio—can create realistic but fake content. They are increasingly used for scams, misinformation, or even entertainment. While detection tools exist, human observation remains crucial. Based on expert analyses as of early 2026, here are seven key signs that a video or voice recording might be a deepfake. Spotting multiple indicators increases the likelihood of identifying manipulated content.

1. Unnatural Facial Movements or Expressions

AI often struggles to replicate subtle human behaviours. Look out for stiff smiles, exaggerated reactions, or emotions that don’t match the tone of the content. Jerky motions, especially around the eyes and mouth, are a common giveaway.

2. Lip-Sync Mismatches

In video deepfakes, mouth movements may not perfectly match the audio. Delays, over-enunciation, or unusual shaping of the lips can indicate that the video has been manipulated.

3. Blurry or Glitchy Edges Around the Face

Areas like the chin, jawline, hairline, or ears can appear smudged or blurry. Flickering edges, double outlines, or isolated blurriness—especially in lower-quality videos—are often signs of AI blending errors.

4. Unusual Blinking or Eye Movements

Humans blink naturally around 15–20 times per minute. Deepfakes may show too little blinking, fixed gazes, or lifeless eyes. Missing or inconsistent reflections in the eyes can also be a clue.

5. Inconsistent Lighting, Shadows, or Backgrounds

Check whether shadows match the light source. Lighting may shift unnaturally across the face, or backgrounds may glitch, change subtly, or fail to interact realistically with the subject. Reflections that don’t match the surroundings are also suspicious.

6. Audio Anomalies

In voice recordings or videos, listen for robotic tones, choppy sentences, awkward pauses, or unnatural inflections. Background sounds may not align with the setting, and the voice might lack emotional depth or natural rhythm.

7. Lack of Verifiable Source or Watermark

Authentic content usually has traceable origins or metadata. Deepfakes may lack watermarks or come from unverified sources. Be cautious of unusual urgency, content out of context, or behaviour that doesn’t match the person depicted.

While no single indicator confirms a deepfake, spotting several of these signs together should raise suspicion. Tools like watermark detection software or forensic analysis can help, but careful human observation remains the most reliable line of defence against AI-manipulated media.
