Tinubu Approves New Gratuity Scheme for Retiring Civil Servants

March 5, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new exit benefit scheme granting retiring federal civil servants a gratuity equivalent to 100 percent of their annual salary, officials said on Thursday.

The decision was approved by the Federal Executive Council and will take effect from January 1, 2026, according to a statement from the office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

Under the scheme, civil servants who have completed at least 10 years of service will receive a one-off gratuity equal to their total annual emolument upon retirement, in addition to benefits under Nigeria’s contributory pension system.

Didi Walson-Jack, head of the civil service, said the measure was designed to strengthen retirement security for federal workers and recognise their years of service.

“This approval is a profound acknowledgement of the invaluable contributions of our civil servants who have devoted their productive years to public service and national development,” she said.

The initiative was developed by an inter-ministerial committee set up by the civil service office, working with agencies including the National Pension Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

Officials said the scheme is intended to complement Nigeria’s contributory pension framework, introduced more than two decades ago, by providing an additional financial cushion for retiring public servants.
