14 Kebbi Wedding Guests Die in Boat Accident

February 17, 2026

The Kebbi State government has expressed profound sorrow after a boat accident in Yauri Local Government Area claimed 14 lives, mostly women, following a wedding celebration.

Governor Nasir Idris offered condolences to the bereaved families, the Yauri Emirate, and local residents, describing the incident as a devastating tragedy for the state.

The accident occurred in Gumbi village as a group returning from escorting a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village, Ngaski LGA, travelled by river. The boat reportedly capsized mid-journey, throwing passengers into the water.

Speaking at the funeral prayers, Governor Idris, represented by the Yauri Local Government Chairman Abubakar Shu’aibu, urged the families and community members to remain steadfast.

“I appeal to you to accept this incident in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator,” he said. “God does what He wants at the time He wants, and nobody has the right to question Him.”

Mr Shu’aibu said the boat was carrying more than 100 people when it overturned. “Sadly, 14 people — 13 women and a child — lost their lives,” he added. The victims were buried according to Islamic rites, with prayers offered for their souls.

He also prayed for comfort for the families and the wider community. “May Allah forgive their shortcomings, grant them Jannatul Firdaus, and give the families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

The tragedy highlights the risks faced by riverine communities in Kebbi State, where water transport remains a common means of travel for social and economic activities. The state government reiterated its sympathy and pledged support for the affected families during the mourning period.
