The governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has relaxed a curfew in Amasiri, in Afikpo Local Government Area, following a deadly attack in a neighbouring community.

The new curfew now runs from 6pm to 7am, replacing the earlier restriction that kept residents indoors from 2pm to 10am.

Governor Nwifuru announced the change on Tuesday after a meeting of the state’s security council in the capital, Abakaliki.

The curfew was imposed after an attack on Okporojo, Oso-Edda, in Edda Local Government Area on 29 January, in which at least four people were killed. The victims were reportedly beheaded, and their heads taken away by the attackers.

Video footage shared on social media showed homes on fire as residents called for help from the authorities.

Despite easing the curfew, the governor said schools in Amasiri would remain closed while security agencies continue their investigations.

He also warned that the community would face tougher measures if the severed heads of the victims were not produced, following an earlier 72-hour ultimatum.

“All those arrested in connection with the killings will be charged to court,” Nwifuru said.

After the attack, the governor took sweeping action in Amasiri, dismissing all government appointees from the area, dissolving the community’s development union leadership and removing all village heads. He also withdrew the recognition of the community’s traditional ruler.

Describing the killings as shocking and brutal, Nwifuru said his government would ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and that peace is restored in the area.
