Nigerian Guild of Editors Mourns Yakubu Mohammed, Dan Agbese

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of two distinguished journalists, Yakubu Mohammed and Dan Agbese.

Both men were among the three surviving co-founders of Newswatch Magazine, and their deaths mark the loss of irreplaceable figures in Nigerian journalism.

In a statement, NGE highlighted that Mohammed and Agbese were respected voices not only within the media but also across Nigeria.

Their incisive commentaries and steadfast commitment to press freedom and democratic values inspired generations of journalists.

“These iconic journalists were fearless and professional, bringing prestige to the profession through their work,” the statement read.

“They gave investigative journalism in Nigeria new momentum and made lasting contributions to nation-building.”

As a mark of respect, NGE has urged journalists across the country to dedicate a day to reflection, focusing on the core principles of good journalism: truth, accuracy, fairness, objectivity, independence, integrity, ethical standards, transparency, and accountability.
