President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi as Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for a second five-year term, effective February 27, 2026.
The announcement came in a statement on Saturday from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. Audi’s initial appointment was made in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, and his first term concluded last Friday during events marking the 2026 World Civil Defence Day at the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja.
“He will resume his duties on Monday with a renewed mandate,” Onanuga said. President Tinubu directed Audi to reposition the Corps for a more prominent role in national security, particularly as the Nigeria Police Force concentrates on combating bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists.

He joined the NSCDC as a volunteer in 1996, rising through ranks to Commandant in 2007 before his elevation to the top post.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users praising Audi’s experience and dedication to security reforms, while others criticised the extension as blocking opportunities for younger officers or reflecting ethnic or political considerations. Critics questioned why the position was not handed over to the next in line, with comments highlighting concerns over age, succession, and perceived biases in appointments.
