FBI Dismisses 10 Agents Investigating Trump

February 28, 2026

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has fired around 10 employees who took part in the investigation into US President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents.

The dismissals come amid renewed attention on the federal probe into Trump’s retention of sensitive materials at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after leaving office in 2021.

FBI Director Kash Patel said that during the investigation, federal agents subpoenaed his phone records while he was a private citizen. He also said White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles had her phone records subpoenaed under similar circumstances. Patel did not suggest any wrongdoing by the employees who were dismissed.

After Trump left office, Special Counsel Jack Smith oversaw two federal investigations into Trump: one examining attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the other probing classified documents Trump had moved to his Florida residence, including alleged obstruction of justice.

Trump and two associates were indicted in 2023 as part of the classified documents investigation. The case against Trump was later dismissed in 2024 by a federal judge in Florida, who ruled Smith had been unlawfully appointed. Earlier this year, a federal appeals court in Georgia dropped charges against the remaining defendants at the Justice Department’s request.

The FBI employees dismissed this week were all involved in the classified documents case. The bureau has not publicly commented on the firings.
The FBI Agents Association criticised the move, saying it could undermine the bureau’s institutional stability. “These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilising the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardising the Bureau’s ability to meet its recruitment goals — ultimately putting the nation at greater risk,” the association said.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, both the Justice Department and the FBI have taken steps affecting personnel involved in prior investigations into him. Legal actions have also targeted former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, who led a civil fraud case against Trump.
