Omokri Rejects Claims Tinubu Using ‘Mystical Powers’

March 1, 2026

Controversial social commentator, Reno Omokri, has rejected claims that Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, is relying on mystical influence to consolidate political support.

In a post on social media on Sunday, Omokri said the president’s growing influence was instead based on economic performance and improvements in security.

His comments came in response to remarks by media publisher and politician Dele Momodu, who had suggested that governors aligning with the ruling party were doing so due to “jazz” — a colloquial term in Nigeria referring to mystical manipulation.

Omokri dismissed the suggestion, arguing that recent economic indicators and policy outcomes explained the political realignments. He cited reported growth in Nigeria’s economy, trade surpluses and increased government revenues as evidence of what he described as progress under the current administration.

He also pointed to improvements in security in parts of the country, saying incidents of violence had reduced compared to previous years, although challenges remained.

Momodu, however, has sharply criticised the government, describing its performance as poor and warning that Nigeria risks drifting towards authoritarianism.

In a separate post, he said Nigerians were “voluntarily walking into slavery” and accused the administration of failing across key areas, including the economy and security. He also raised concerns about political competition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The exchange highlights growing political tensions in Nigeria, as debates intensify over the government’s record and the country’s direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.
