Gumi Praises Iran’s Supreme Leader’s Death as ‘Jihad’

March 1, 2026

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi on Sunday lauded the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling him “a lucky soul” who “died in jihad” against those he described as killers of innocent civilians.

In a Facebook post, the Kaduna-based cleric said Khamenei’s death “will fuel the change in the ummah,” referring to the global Muslim community. He praised the 86-year-old leader for “standing firmly for justice” rather than “hiding in bunkers” and issued a veiled warning to those he accused of orchestrating the attack.

His statement comes amid the largest escalation of conflict in the Middle East in years, after the United States and Israel launched a coordinated military offensive against Iran on Saturday. The strikes, targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure, hit Tehran and other sites across the country, raising regional tensions.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on social media that Khamenei had been killed during the strikes, calling him “one of the most evil people in history.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there were “many signs” the supreme leader no longer lived, and senior Israeli figures claimed his body had been recovered from the rubble.

Iranian state media later confirmed Khamenei’s death, announcing a 40-day mourning period and public holidays in his honour. A presenter on state television said the supreme leader’s “path and mission” would continue even after his “martyrdom.”

Earlier, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, had denied reports that Khamenei was dead, telling U.S. media that the supreme leader and other senior officials were “alive, as far as I know,” feeding uncertainty over his fate in the hours after the attack.

The strikes prompted immediate retaliation from Tehran, with Iranian forces launching missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases in the Gulf and on Israeli targets. Regional capitals from Bahrain to Kuwait reported explosions as Iran’s Revolutionary Guards vowed continued action against what they called aggression.
