Four Killed in Stampede During Ramadan Alms Distribution in Katsina

Four people have died in a stampede during the distribution of Ramadan alms in Katsina State, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred late on February 26 at Kofar Guga quarters in Katsina, when a large crowd gathered at the residence of philanthropist Dahiru Usman Sarki to receive annual charity.

Police spokesperson Abubakar Aliyu said a distress call was received at about 9:00 pm, prompting officers to respond to the scene. Victims were evacuated to nearby hospitals, but four later died from their injuries.

“The Katsina State Police Command regrets to report a stampede incident that occurred during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms, resulting in several people sustaining injuries,” Aliyu said.

The Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and ordered an investigation into the incident.

Authorities also urged individuals and organisations planning alms distributions to notify the police in advance to ensure proper crowd control and prevent similar tragedies.
