Nigeria Power Output Falls Below 4,000 MW Amid Gas Shortages

March 5, 2026

Electricity generation on Nigeria’s national grid has fallen sharply due to persistent gas supply shortages, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said on Thursday.

Total power generation stood at 3,940.53 megawatts as of 5:00 a.m. on March 5, below expected levels as several thermal plants struggled with limited gas supply, the operator said in a statement.

NISO said thermal generating stations were operating at about 40 percent of their capacity after receiving only 652.92 million standard cubic feet of gas, far below the volume required to sustain normal output.

The operator said it was working with power generation companies and gas suppliers to stabilise supply and restore generation levels.
“NISO is actively working with generation companies and gas suppliers to monitor the situation and restore output as supply stabilises,” the statement said.
