Seven Killed in Plateau State Community Buried Amid Protests

February 28, 2026

Residents and community leaders in Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Saturday buried seven people killed in a recent gun attack, as mourners protested the continuing violence.

The burial at a local primary school came less than a week after nine victims of a terror attack in Dorowa Babuje, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, were laid to rest. Attendees carried placards reading “Irigwe lives matter” and “End Christian genocide in Nigeria,” expressing outrage over repeated attacks.

Ezekiel Bini, National President of the Irigwe Youths Movement, condemned the killings. “We are tired of burying our people. We demand justice and protection for our community,” he said, highlighting what he described as longstanding insecurity.

The Paramount Ruler of the Irigwe, His Royal Highness Ronku Aku, called the day “a dark day for our community” and urged the government to address open grazing, which he said fuels the attacks.

Among the victims buried on Saturday was Abbas Musa, a health officer and graduate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, along with five other family members reportedly followed into their bedrooms and killed on February 26.

Residents have called for enhanced security measures to prevent further violence in the area.
