Protest Rocks Nigeria Over Reported Killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader

March 3, 2026

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have staged protests in several Nigerian cities following reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during air strikes attributed to the United States and Israel.

In Lagos, demonstrators marched through parts of the Maryland area on Monday, carrying placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with Iran. The protest was described by organisers as peaceful, with security personnel monitoring the procession.

The reported death of Khamenei follows claims by Iranian media, including Jamaran News Agency, that his wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, died on 2 March after being injured in earlier strikes in Tehran.

There has been no independent confirmation of the deaths, and US and Israeli authorities have not publicly verified the claims.

Similar demonstrations were held on Sunday in northern states including Kano, Yobe, Gombe and Bauchi, where members of the group gathered to mourn and express opposition to the reported attacks.

Organisers in Lagos said the protests would continue across the south-west region. One local coordinator said the demonstrations were intended to condemn what he described as foreign intervention and to show solidarity with Iran.

In Kano, police said officers were deployed to monitor the situation after intelligence reports indicated planned protests. The state’s police commissioner, Ibrahim Bakori, said officers escorted demonstrators to prevent unrest.

Authorities in Bauchi also confirmed that protests there were conducted without incident, while in Yobe, hundreds of people marched through several towns carrying images of Khamenei and Iranian flags.

Meanwhile, the United States Department of State has issued a security alert to its citizens in Nigeria and elsewhere, urging increased vigilance following escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The warning comes amid reports that Iran has launched retaliatory strikes against US targets in the Gulf region, raising fears of a wider conflict.

Speaking during a broadcast on Saturday, US President Donald Trump said he was determined to act against Iran’s leadership, while also calling on Iranians to “take control” of their government after the military operation.

The situation remains fluid, with international concern growing over the risk of further escalation.
