How Girlfriend Led to Mexico’s Most Wanted Cartel Leader “El Mencho”’s Death

February 24, 2026

A leading figure in Mexico’s organised crime network has been killed following a military operation that officials say was triggered by intelligence linked to one of his close associates.

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho” and head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), died after being wounded in a clash with Mexican forces on Sunday. He was being airlifted to hospital when he died, authorities said.

Mexico’s defence secretary, Ricardo Trevilla, said the operation was launched after intelligence indicated that one of Oseguera’s romantic partners planned to meet him in Tapalpa, a mountain town about 130km (80 miles) from Guadalajara.

According to officials, the woman met Oseguera on Saturday and later left, allowing security forces to confirm his location. Troops then carried out a coordinated land and air raid the following day.

A violent Confrontation

Trevilla described the raid as “pretty violent”, saying Oseguera was found with a cache of weapons, including assault rifles and rocket launchers. His security detail resisted the operation, and one military helicopter was hit, forcing an emergency landing.

Oseguera and two of his guards were injured during the firefight. All three died while being transported to hospital, officials said.

The CJNG leader had long been one of Mexico’s most wanted figures, accused of organised crime offences and weapons trafficking. His group has previously shown the capacity to challenge state forces, including shooting down a military helicopter in 2015 during an earlier attempt to capture him.

Violence Spreads After Death

Authorities said the killing of Oseguera triggered a wave of violence across large parts of the country, with roadblocks and vehicles set on fire reported in multiple states.

Security forces have since deployed around 10,000 troops to restore order, while calm has returned to many areas. However, sporadic blockades were still reported in parts of Jalisco and neighbouring Michoacán.

Officials also confirmed the death of a close associate, known as “El Tuli”, who was accused of organising retaliatory attacks following news of Oseguera’s death.

Interior security chief Omar Garcia Harfuch said the cartel leader’s body would be handed over to his family.

The killing marks a major moment in Mexico’s long-running battle against powerful drug cartels, though analysts say it remains unclear whether it will weaken the CJNG or trigger further instability.
