January 13, 2026

The University of Maiduguri has dismissed as false a viral video circulating on social media which claims that some of its students were arrested over alleged links to the Boko Haram insurgency.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the university said the video was misleading and did not originate from any recognised security or government authority.

“The content of the video is false and misleading and is capable of creating fear, panic and unnecessary tension among members of the public,” the university’s registrar, Ahmad Lawan, said.

He added that internal checks carried out by the institution showed that no student was currently under investigation or in detention for involvement in terrorist activities.

“Following thorough internal verification, the management can confirm that no student of the University of Maiduguri has been arrested, detained or investigated for alleged links to Boko Haram,” Mr Lawan said.

The registrar said the university maintained a strict stance against extremism and criminality, stressing that it worked closely with security agencies and community leaders to promote peace in Nigeria’s north-east.

“The University of Maiduguri operates a zero-tolerance policy towards extremism, violence and all forms of criminal behaviour,” he said. “We have consistently partnered with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to ensure a safe and peaceful learning environment.”

The management warned against the spread of unverified information on social media and urged the public to rely on official sources.

“We advise media organisations, parents, guardians and social media users to seek information only from credible and authorised channels,” the statement said.

The university also called for calm, while reaffirming its commitment to discipline, national unity and the training of graduates who contribute positively to society.
