February 26, 2026

Residents in south-western Nigeria have blocked a major highway in protest after gunmen abducted worshippers from a church in Ondo State.

The demonstrators shut the Akure–Owo expressway for several hours on Wednesday, demanding improved security following the attack in Uso community.

Police say at least five people remain in captivity after armed men stormed a vigil at the Celestial Church of Christ around midnight on Tuesday.

The attackers reportedly took six worshippers into a nearby forest, but one later escaped.

The incident has sparked anger among residents, who say insecurity in the area is worsening.

“We are here to tell the government that insecurity in Ondo State is increasing,” one protester, who gave his name as Deoye, said.

“Imagine people worshipping being kidnapped inside a church. This is unacceptable.”

Ondo State police confirmed the attack and said a joint operation involving officers, the military and local vigilante groups was under way to rescue the victims.

Police spokesman Abayomi Jimoh said one of the abducted worshippers had been freed, while a suspected informant had been arrested and was assisting investigators.

He added that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and track down those responsible.
