Plateau Traders Buried After Attack as Tensions Rise

February 24, 2026

The bodies of traders killed in an attack in central Nigeria have been recovered and buried, as authorities moved to prevent further unrest in Plateau State.

The victims, who regularly travelled from Jos to trade in nearby communities, were buried on Monday evening in Barkin Ladi, local officials and residents said.

Relatives said the traders had been attacked while travelling towards Pankshin, an area where they were known to conduct weekly shoe business.

Government sources told local media that the decision to bury the victims outside their home community was taken to ease rising tensions after news of the killings spread.

The victims were from Yandoya, a community in Jos North, and were among those affected by recent violence in parts of the state.

Local leaders said six traders were caught up in the attack, with two escaping and four killed.

The incident follows a series of attacks in nearby communities, including Dorowa Babuje and Jol, where at least 10 people were reported killed.

A community leader, Danjuma Ibrahim, said security forces were deployed after youths gathered to demand the release of the bodies, raising fears of further unrest.

He urged residents to remain calm and called on authorities to take stronger action to address the recurring violence in the area.
