EFCC Charges Railway Officials Over Alleged ₦2bn Fraud

Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has charged three senior officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation over alleged fraud and corruption totalling more than 2.04bn naira.

The defendants include former finance director Felix Njoku, as well as Benjamin Iloanusi and Oche Ogbole-Inalegwu, both serving directors in the corporation.

They appeared before separate judges at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday on charges including abuse of office and unlawful enrichment.

Njoku faces a 17-count charge involving about 736m naira. Prosecutors allege he received payments from contractors linked to contracts awarded during his tenure. He denied the charges and was granted temporary release on health grounds, pending a bail hearing in March.

Iloanusi was charged with alleged fraud of about 915m naira. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody, with his case adjourned until March.

Ogbole-Inalegwu faces a nine-count charge involving about 395m naira linked to payments from a contractor. He also denied the charges and was allowed to remain on bail. His case was adjourned until April.

The EFCC said the alleged offences contravene provisions of Lagos State criminal law.
