BREAKING: Niger Coup Leaders Form New Government

August 10, 2023

Niger’s military officials who took over the government in a coup last month have announced the formation of a fresh government, as conveyed through a decree broadcast on national television on Thursday.

Heading the 21-member cabinet is Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, while generals selected from the newly established military governing council will oversee the defense and interior ministries.

The announcement coincides with a scheduled meeting of West African leaders on Thursday, where discussions will revolve around potential military interventions against the group that orchestrated the coup, led by former Presidential Guard Commander Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani.

Key deliberations are anticipated from this gathering, taking place in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, as highlighted in a statement released by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Tuesday.

ECOWAS had previously imposed sanctions on the coup’s instigators, further causing reductions in aid from the European Union and France to the already struggling nation.
