Tinubu Calls for Constitutional Change to Allow State Police

February 26, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on lawmakers to amend Nigeria’s constitution to enable the creation of state police, describing it as necessary to tackle growing insecurity.

He made the appeal during an interfaith breakfast with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

Tinubu said Nigeria’s security challenges, including terrorism, banditry and insurgency, require a more decentralised policing system that can respond quickly at the local level.

“We are facing terrorism, banditry and insurgency,” he said, urging senators to begin work on constitutional changes that would help “secure our country” and improve safety in communities.

He said state police would complement existing federal security structures and strengthen community-based, intelligence-led policing.

The president also praised the relationship between the executive and the National Assembly, saying cooperation was key to addressing the country’s challenges.

Tinubu thanked lawmakers for backing major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and tax changes, which he said had helped stabilise the economy.
