Oba Ewuare II Celebrates 72nd Birthday, Ninth Coronation Anniversary in Benin City

His Majesty, Oba Ewuare II N’Ogidigan, the 40th Oba of Benin, is marking his 72nd birthday and the ninth anniversary of his coronation today with grand celebrations across Benin City.

The festivities are drawing members of the Royal Family, traditional chiefs, market leaders, and well-wishers from Edo State and beyond.

The day’s activities feature vibrant royal processions, traditional drumming, and cultural dances, celebrating the Oba’s enduring role as a unifying figure and custodian of Benin’s rich cultural heritage.

The Benin Traditional Council has officially invited all members of the Benin Royal Family, chiefs, Ikao, Igiohen, Edionwere, Okaighele, and market women to a royal feast at the Benin Palace, starting at 1 p.m. The event forms a central part of the ninth coronation anniversary celebrations, with the traditional benediction, “Oba ghato ‘kpere. Ise,” setting the tone for the day.

President Tinubu is sending warm congratulations, commending the monarch for his “unwavering commitment to promoting peace, unity, and social harmony within his domain,” as well as his work in tackling societal challenges like human trafficking and illegal migration among youths.

The President also applauds Oba Ewuare II’s “advocacy for a cultural renaissance, preservation of traditional values, and efforts to repatriate African artefacts from Western countries,” praying for him “long life, good health, and continued historic achievements on the throne of his ancestors.”

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo joins the celebrations, highlighting “the Oba’s leadership and dedication to the Benin Kingdom” and emphasizing ongoing collaboration between the traditional institution and the state government to promote Edo State’s cultural and developmental growth.

Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa also praises the monarch, stating: “I join all sons and daughters of the Benin Kingdom to eulogise the virtues of our revered monarch on his ninth coronation anniversary. May the legacy of peace, harmony, prosperity, and progress witnessed during your reign endure forever, and may Almighty God bless you with robust health and many more years of fulfillment.”

He further commends the Oba’s “uncommon patriotism, unassailable piety, and sterling leadership qualities,” noting their inspiration for Edo State’s ongoing transformation.

The celebrations today not only mark Oba Ewuare II’s personal milestones but also showcase his pivotal role in preserving Benin’s cultural heritage, fostering unity, and raising the kingdom’s international profile.
