The unveiling ceremony, held at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, drew prominent figures from the aviation industry, government and traditional institutions.

In a statement, United Nigeria Airlines described the event as a celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, noting that the aircraft honour “the man who gave Africa a voice to the world through literature” and a traditional ruler who represents the wisdom and continuity of a generations-old throne.

The airline also announced plans to further expand its operations, revealing that four additional aircraft are expected to join its fleet in the coming months.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who attended the ceremony, said the acquisition reflected the success of efforts to support indigenous airline operators and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry.

According to Keyamo, the process that led to the acquisition of the aircraft began in 2024 during a visit by Nigerian airline operators to aircraft manufacturer Boeing in Seattle, United States.

“The deal to get in these aircraft started in 2024 in the US, when I led Nigerian operators to Boeing in Seattle, Washington,” the minister said.

He credited the Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, for pursuing the transaction and successfully meeting all due diligence requirements needed to conclude the acquisition.

Keyamo said the Federal Government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for private operators to thrive through policies designed to support business growth and investment.

The addition of the Boeing 737-800NG aircraft is expected to strengthen United Nigeria Airlines’ operational capacity at a time when domestic air travel demand continues to grow.

Industry observers say the fleet expansion could improve route connectivity, increase passenger options and contribute to broader efforts aimed at deepening competition and efficiency within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
