South Africa’s Ramaphosa Steps Back from Public Duties Due to ill Health

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has been booked off from public engagements due to ill health following his return from the BRICS summit in India, the presidency said on Wednesday.

Ramaphosa’s medical team advised him to rest and recover, but the presidency did not disclose the nature of his illness or how long he would be away from official duties.

Cabinet ministers will represent him at scheduled engagements where necessary during his recovery, the presidency said.

Ramaphosa returned to South Africa on Monday after attending the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Sept. 12 and 13.

The development comes as Deputy President Paul Mashatile recovers from a minor medical procedure and remains under medical advice to rest until he is cleared to resume his duties.

Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola is expected to lead South Africa’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in Ramaphosa’s absence, Reuters reported.

The presidency provided no further details on Ramaphosa’s condition or when he would resume his official duties.
