United Nigeria Airlines Names Boeing 737-800 After Obi of Onitsha in Birthday Honour

United Nigeria Airlines has named one of its newly acquired Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft after the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, in honour of the monarch’s 85th birthday celebration.

The airline disclosed the development in a statement issued by its management, describing the gesture as part of its commemoration of the traditional ruler’s decades-long leadership and contributions to cultural preservation, peace-building, and community development.

According to the statement, the aircraft recently added to the airline’s fleet has been branded in honour of the monarch and will be formally unveiled at a ceremony whose date is expected to be announced later.

The airline said the decision reflects its recognition of the Obi of Onitsha’s influence as one of Nigeria’s prominent traditional rulers, noting that his reign has continued to promote unity and social development within and beyond the Igbo community.

“In commemoration of this remarkable birthday, we at United Nigeria Airlines have branded our newly acquired Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft in the name: HRM Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha,” the statement read. “The aircraft will be unveiled in a formal ceremony soon and put to use.”

The management further described the monarch’s leadership as “a beacon of dignity, unity and progress,” adding that his public service record has continued to inspire confidence and respect among diverse constituencies in the country.

Born in 1941, Achebe, widely known by the traditional title Agbogidi, has served as the Obi of Onitsha since 2002 and is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential first-class traditional rulers.

The airline extended birthday wishes to the monarch, praying for continued good health and sustained leadership as he marks his 85th year.
