The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that coordinated air operations conducted in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) have resulted in the killing of more than 20 suspected ISIS/ISWAP fighters in North-East Nigeria.
In a press release issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila UBA, On Monday, May 18, 2026 the military said the strikes were carried out in the general area of Metele following what it described as the observed convergence and movement of terrorist elements.

According to the statement, multiple airstrikes were executed as part of ongoing counterterrorism operations aimed at dismantling insurgent networks operating across the region.
“Following observed convergence and migration of terrorist elements, multiple air strikes were conducted resulting in the elimination of more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters,” the Defence Headquarters stated.
The military added that the operation forms part of sustained efforts to degrade the capabilities of insurgents, particularly following the reported neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki in earlier coordinated strikes.

The statement further stressed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in partnership with international allies including United States Africa Command, will continue aggressive operations aimed at denying terrorist groups safe havens within the country.
Reaffirming its operational posture, the Defence Headquarters declared that no part of Nigeria would be allowed to serve as a sanctuary for terrorist organisations, including Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and its affiliates.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation. Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated,” the statement added.
The latest strikes are part of intensified military operations across the North-East, where Nigerian forces have sustained air and ground offensives against insurgent factions in recent weeks.
Military authorities say further assessments of the operation are ongoing.
