Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has secured 950,000 barrels of locally produced crude from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame field, providing fresh feedstock as the refinery works to sustain operations and increase fuel production for the domestic market, Prime Business Africa reports.
The cargo, delivered aboard the Sonangol Cazenga and supplied by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is the first shipment of Sankofa crude received by a Ghanaian refinery, TOR Managing Director Edmond Kombat said on Friday.

Kombat said the light, sweet crude would be processed into fuel products for Ghanaian consumers, describing the delivery as an important milestone in TOR’s restart and continued operations.
The shipment strengthens cooperation between Ghana’s upstream and downstream petroleum sectors and could enable more value from the country’s crude resources to be retained within the domestic economy.
The crude was produced from the Sankofa-Gye Nyame field in the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) area near Sanzule in Ghana’s Western Region. Its light and sweet characteristics make it suitable for producing gasoline, gasoil, aviation fuel and liquefied petroleum gas.
The transaction was conducted on commercial terms, with TOR paying for the cargo through a letter of credit accepted by GNPC, according to officials. The arrangement did not create additional debt exposure for the refinery.

GNPC Chief Executive Kwame Ntow Amoah said the corporation has about eight to 10 similar crude cargoes available annually, although some volumes are already committed under existing supply arrangements. Increased production could create scope for further deliveries to TOR, he said.
GNPC and TOR are also discussing broader cooperation, including the possible supply of natural gas to support the refinery’s operations.
The delivery comes as Ghana seeks to strengthen its refining capacity and make greater use of indigenous petroleum resources. For TOR, regular access to suitable crude will be important to maintaining operations and expanding its contribution to the domestic fuel supply.
