Telecom Statistics Adjusted as Nigeria Witnesses Increase In Active Voice, Internet Subscriptions

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has released updated telecommunications statistical indicators, revealing shifts in active voice and internet subscriptions.

The adjustments, based on the latest population growth figures, align with international best practices and provide a view of the telecom landscape.

In September 2023, with the updated population projection of 216,783,381, the nation’s teledensity decreased from 115.63% to 102.30%. Broadband penetration also saw a decline from 45.47% to 40.85%, while active voice subscriptions experienced marginal growth from 220,361,186 to 221,769,883.

Internet subscriptions, too, saw a slight increase, rising from 159,034,717 in August 2023 to 160,171,757 in September 2023.

The subsequent months revealed fluctuations in the telecom industry. In October 2023, active voice subscriptions grew by 0.19%, and teledensity stood at 102.49%. Internet subscriptions increased by 0.60% compared to September. In November, a 0.46% growth in active voice subscriptions was observed, with teledensity at 102.97% and a 0.57% rise in internet subscriptions from October 2023.

Explaining the adjustments, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasized the importance of maintaining data integrity. He stated, “This ensures accurate measurement of the Commission’s progress towards attaining increased broadband penetration rates, improved quality of service, and increased population coverage.” Dr. Maida highlighted the significance of this data for international bodies, development agencies, operators, investors, and the general public.

The adjustments align with Section 89 Subsection 3(d) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, mandating the NCC to monitor and report on the state of the telecommunications industry. The release concludes with the affirmation of the appropriateness of the adjustment process by the Director of Public Affairs, dated January 30, 2024.
