Bertha Yalter, a 71-year-old woman from Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States, is currently facing attempted murder charges after allegedly violently attacking her husband of 50 years. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday inside their Miami home after the husband received a message from his ex-girlfriend of 60 years ago, who is currently in Turkey.

According to authorities cited by the New York Post, the husband was found in an “extremely fragile” state, displaying several serious bruises, open lacerations, and bleeding bite marks. The report states that Yalter attempted to smother him with a pillow during the alleged assault.

The message from the ex-girlfriend reportedly triggered the confrontation, leading to a violent altercation between the couple. Cell phone video footage captured some of the confrontation, and Yalter allegedly admitted to the attack when speaking to authorities, as reported by Law and Crime.

However, Jeffrey Weiner, Yalter’s lawyer, disputes the severity of the charges. Weiner claims that the husband wishes to drop the case and insists that he is fine. Additionally, Weiner denies the allegation that Yalter attempted to smother her husband with a pillow.

“They got into an argument, it got out of hand, but there was absolutely no reason for her to be charged with attempted second-degree murder,” Weiner stated, describing the situation as “unfortunate” and “distasteful.”

During a hearing, a state attorney argued that the attempted pillow smothering constituted attempted murder because it could potentially suffocate and kill the victim. The attorney also listed other ways in which Yalter allegedly attacked her husband, as per footage posted by NBC South Florida. Yalter’s lawyers told New York Post she is “severely overcharged” in this case.

Bertha Yalter is currently in custody, awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for later this week.
