An impeachment notice was served on the state governor by the Assembly alongside side its Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, on Monday and the governor immediately stormed the Assembly Complex on receiving the notice.

The members of the House of Assembly took to their heels as soon as tear gas was fired outside the complex. The supporters of the governor in a bid to resist his planned impeachment immediately staged a protest outside the Complex.

The cause of the fire incident at the State Assembly Complex is yet to be ascertained. Similarly, the reason for the impeachment plan is yet to be known, but unconfirmed reports claimed that it might not be unconnected with the ongoing political rift between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

While addressing his supporters outside the Assembly Complex, the governor said that he had not done anything wrong to warrant an impeachment by the House of Assembly.

According to him, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.”
The governor also promised his supporters to ensure that justice and democracy are upheld adding that he would comment on the matter at the right time.

“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press.”

A video circulating on social media also reveals the governor being attacked by the police with tear gas and water outside the Assembly Complex.

The governor further disclosed that the security had been compromised.
