A newly launched national Tax Identification Number (TIN) portal in Nigeria has received widespread praise from users, with more than 98% reporting a smooth experience, the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) said.
The portal, launched on 1 January 2026, allows individuals to generate a unique 13-digit TIN using their National Identity Number, while businesses can retrieve theirs using registration numbers issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission or other government agencies.
Officials say the platform is part of an effort to consolidate fragmented taxpayer records across federal and state systems into a single, centralised database. The initiative is also linked to broader fiscal and tax reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aimed at improving revenue coordination and data security.

Feedback was collected through a structured survey by the JRB Help Desk team, conducted via social media channels including Facebook, X, Instagram, WhatsApp, and follow-up phone interviews. Respondents were asked to assess the portal’s speed, ease of navigation, convenience, and overall experience.
Head of the Help Desk, Effiong Abasifreke, said: “We asked taxpayers four questions: how fast was your tax ID retrieval process? Was the portal simple to navigate? Was it convenient? And how would you rate the portal overall? Over 98% said the experience was seamless.”
Users shared similar sentiments. Amina Yahaya, a resident of Abuja, said: “The process was very seamless. It didn’t take up to 10 seconds after I input my NIN details when my Tax ID appeared. I want to commend JRB — I will tell my friends and colleagues to retrieve their Tax ID.”
Others echoed her view. Lagos-based taxpayer Oyedemi Jide said the portal was “simple and easy to use,” while a respondent on WhatsApp, Tonai R., described it as “quick, very easy, no inconveniences, awesome.” Corporate users, including Trinity Music Academy and Succinct Shortlet, also praised the portal for its speed and convenience.

Speaking on the nationwide rollout, JRB Executive Secretary Olusegun Adesokan urged those yet to retrieve their TINs to do so through the official portal. He said the system was designed as a self-service platform with strong data protection safeguards, compliant with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Adesokan also dismissed concerns that financial institutions would use the new TIN framework to deduct funds arbitrarily from customers’ accounts. He added: “The tax reforms are well-conceived, pro-poor and pro-growth, providing incentives for low-income earners as well as businesses. Implementation has commenced at national and subnational levels, and we are working with partner agencies to ensure smooth execution.”
The JRB said ongoing public cooperation remains critical to the success of the reforms, emphasising that a centralised TIN system is key to building a more coordinated and transparent revenue system across Nigeria.
